Mt. Laoshan lies in the south of Shandong Peninsula and part of it is under the YellowSea. The summit named Giant Peak is 1132.7m high. Various typical erosionalgeomorphic features such as ice table, paleo-cirques, knife-edge crest, horn peak, col,U-shaped Valleys, ice mortars ,etc and morainic geomorphic features such asterminal-moraine, lateral moraine , morainic coast, morainic fan , morainic mounds, etc. are well developed in Mt.Laoshan. Well preserved remains of Quaternaryglaciation could also be found in other places in the hills in Shandong Peninsula.Four glacial epochs are identified in Mt. Laoshan, named as the Abalone IslandGlacial Epoch, the Qianfengan Glacial Epoch, Liuqing River Glacial Epoch andShuzhuling Glacial Epoch, respectively In Early Pleistocene, the altitude of snowlinewas about 60-90 meters in eastern Mt. Laoshan. More than sixty paleo-glacial tonguesdeveloped in Mt.Laoshan. During the Abalone Island Glacial Epoch ,some of themextended into theYellow Sea.Sporopollen analysis shows that the percentage of spruce pollen in some morainesamples is more than 13%, indicating that the climate in Mt.Lashan was very coldduring the ice age. Double- or multi-modal grain-size probability curves of themoraines are the typical characteristic of sediments deposited by glaciation. The snowlines varied in different areas and different ice ages during Pleistocene.Regional landforms and climatic conditions are the key factors dominating the altitudeof snowline during the ice age. Southward migration of Cold Wave Source andPaleo-North China Lakes played an important role in the occurence of glaciationduring Pleistocene. Based on the research in the hills in Shandong Peninsula, remainsof paleo-glaciation can be found on hills with the altitude of over 300m. Discovery of iiAbstractpaleo-glaciation in the hills in Shandong Peninsula will push forward the study onpaleo-glaciation in East of China and bring new problems on Quaternary environmentin eastern Asia.
