Discontinuity problems of dielectric guiding structures widely exist among various millimeter-wave and optical integrated circuits and systems, which have been one of the most important practical problems in the electromagnetic engineering. The investigations on scattering and radiation characteristics of all kinds of dielectric guiding structures are directly related to this issue, and the successful solving of these characteristics has become the fundamentation for design and optimization of the devices and systems consisting of dielectric waveguides. The explosional development of left-handed dielectric waveguides during the recent years broadens the scope for millimeter-wave and optical integrated circuits and provides unique opportunities to invent new applications.Under such background, the scattering and radiation characteristics of discontinuity problems of left-handed dielectric guiding structures are investigated systematically in the present dissertation.Various of unique electromagnetic phenomenons have been revealed, such as anomalous dispersion, backward radiation, evanescent wave enhancing, mode conversion suppression,et al., physical insights of which have also been presented.Taking advantage of these unique electromagnetic properties, several novel devices composed of left-handed dielectric waveguide discontinuities have been proposed, including left-handed dielectric surface wave antennas, directional couplers and leaky-wave antennas, all of which possess the bright features of outstanding performances. An electromagnetic engineering method wich combines the rigorous mode-matching method together with the multimode network theory has been employed for the purpose of analyzing these novel devices systematically and accurately. The works described in the present dissertation establish important theoretical guidelines for the accurate design and optimization for such kind of novel devices in millimeter-wave and optical integrated circuits.
