The metal complexing surfactant is a new kind of surfactant developed recently. By introducing Schiff base moiety into the molecule of surfactant, the author creatively synthesized a novel metal complexing surfactant, which is the Schiff's base of bis[(2-hydroxy-3- sulfonic sodium-5-methyl) phenyl dodecanone] with ethylene diamine. In this dissertation the research on the surfactant is involved not only in the process of synthesis and basic properties which including dissolution, foaming, emulsifying, solubilization, surface activity and solution stability, but also in complexation of the surfactant and the applications of the Cu( II) complex of the surfactant on mimic enzyme catalysis and antibacterial activity. The new surfactant was synthesized from the main starting materials such as lauric acid, p-cresol, chlorosulphonic acid and ethylene diamine, by 5 classic reactions which are acyl chlorination, esterification, Fries rearrangement, sulfonation and condensation, with total yield of 58%. The factors which influenced on every reaction were also discussed. The property research indicated that at 25 C the surfactant can easily dissolved in water, and Krafft point is 18 C; the ultimate foaming height is 82mm and relative stability of the foam is 0.95 at the concentration of 2 .0 10 -2 mol/L, which show certain foaming activity and high foaming stability. Emulsifying test showed the surfactant has emulsifying ability and the value of HLB is 16.4; The lowest surface tension of the surfactant solution is 30.6mN/m. C20 is 5 10-5mol/L, CMC is 6.3 10-4mol/L, those show high surface activity; The solubilization value of benzyl alcohol in 0.05 mol/L surfactant solution is 0.89 mol/mol, and benzyl alcohol is mainly solubilized at the "fence" of the surfactant micelles by test of 'H NMR. Kinetic research of the surfactant hydrolysis showed that the surfactant could be hydrolysed in acidic solution at high temperature, while couldn't be hydrolysed in neutral or basic solution. Spectrophtographic test indicated that the surfactant has ability of complexing with metal ions, and can coordinate with Co2+, Ni 2+, Cu2+, Zn2+to give stable complexes whose stable constants are 8.56 107, 2.62 109, 1.90x108, 1.25xl07 respectively in 0.01 mol/L borax buffer solutions.Cu complex of the surfactant have water soluble ability and surface activity, can catalyze the air oxidation of benzyl alcohol or Benzoin not only in DMF solution but also in alkali water solution. The kinetic experiment indicated that the catalysis characterized in mimic enzyme catalysis, the kinetic equation of the catalysis is V = 5.9CS/(0.13 +CS) at 24 C. The mechanism for the catalysis may be that in alkaline solution the Cu complex in its own micelles can combine with O2 to form a 1:1 type of superoxide which can catalyze as galactose oxidase dose.Test on the antibacterial activity expressed that the surfactant and its Cu complex have high antibacterial activity, and the latter is better than the former.
