In this paper, firstly, based on the systemic analysis on the expanding law of the cracks near by the free surface in the mine pillar, the stress criterion is raised and the forming mechanism of damage area is analyzed. Secondly, the calculational formula of the damage width at the edge of stope and section is got by the fracture mechanics. Thirdly, because the self-organizing characteristics are existed during the expansion and perforation of the cracks, the renormalization group method is adopted to study on the self- organizing characteristics of the mine pillar to describe the expansion. Fourthly, the cusp catastrophe model is built to forecast the instability of the mine pillar for the damage of the mine pillar belongs to the study category of cusp catastrophe. At last, under the background of the seventh Diggings in Xiadian Gold Mine, Softwear FLAC3D is used to analyze the damage law of the mine pillar and surrounding rocks to offer the basis of stope structure design and the parameter optimization.
