Machining wood and wood based materials by any kind of tools with knifes, like milling, molding, sawing and drilling, is one of the most important procedures in wood industry. After cutting, the various surfaces and shapes can be obtained. The edge-shape of tools is the important technique parameter to the working quality. The aim to investigate the tools wear characteristics is to optimize the processing technology in Machining wood and wood based materials.Based on the measurement methods of tool wear, the new measuring principle and method was to be investigated in this paper, to analyze the tool wear in quantitative and qualitative. After analysis and research the mechanism of tool wear, a new kind of measurement device for wear of cutting edges was developed. The device bases on image processing and allows diagnosing the figure of the blunted edge. The cutting edge is illuminated by parallel light on an angle of incidence of 45°. A special screen generates a shadow line on the cutting edge surface. The projection of tools was measured through microscope, recorded by CCD camera. Relation between tools and projection was given.A lot of experiments with this device to analyze the wear behavior of wood working tools had to be done. In this device, the light source plays a very important role. The different light source was to be analyzed in test. The strength of light was given, the reflection and refraction of light was solved in primary. A group data can be obtained from each tool, the data was to be processed through the special software for image, to calculate the tool wear. The wear of tools was described in details, the wear mark B, the back setting of cutting edge SV, value of wear h1, micro-clearance angle αm, volume V were introduced. The testing tools are made from hart metal and high-speed steel, work piece materials are the boards of spruce and beech, particle board and MDF. The cutting tests were done in various cutting conditions, such as cutting path, cutting velocity and feed velocity. The tools wear were measured with the optical device. The wear model was setup. The simulating software was programmed, for virtual working to predict the tools life. The study of wear behavior of wood working tools has an important theoretical meaning for analyzing wear mechanism and for optimizing machining wood. It will provide important dependencies for processing and utilizing wood and wood based material and for their technical parameter.
