Lakes are very important in freshwater supply. At present, most of the lakes in the world are suffering from eutrophication with industrialization, economic growth, and human activities. Frequent monitoring and integrated management for lakes are necessary. However, conventional methods for monitoring in lakes which are time & money-consumed can't provide water quality information of the whole lake. With spatial and temporal information, remote sensing technique is suitable to obtain such information quickly and frequently, and it'll be widely applied in water quality monitoring of lakes in future because of its advantage of fastness, economy and long-term dynamic monitoring.Based on the analysis of former theory, techniques and methods in water quality monitoring via remote sensing, this paper studies the remote sensing parameters in water quality monitoring, including Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), Suspended Sediment (SS), Yellow Substance, Water Temperature, Water Distance and so on. Among these, Chl-a and SS are chief water bio-physical parameters, and they are widely used to indicate trophic state of lakes. The spectral characteristics of Taihu Lake water are studied by analyzing the field spectra measurement in this paper. The results show that bands around 550nm, 660nm and 690nm are well related with Chl-a, and bands around 570nm and 700nm are suitable to detect SS. Comparing with single band, band combinations (including difference, ratio and sum & difference combination et al) have better correlation with Chl-a and SS.With high spectral, time and radiance resolution, MODIS has become one of the best potential data source for lakes monitoring. After atmosphere correctly, MODIS bands and band combinations are correlated with Chl-a and SS concentration...
