Human being has two major problems in its development road: resource and environment. Today's modern society heavily depends on petroleum products, but the contradiction between the crude oil's produce and consummation is bigger than ever. The oil's price has doubled in the recently several years.The increasing consummation of the oil and its product has generated tremendous pollution to our environment. Currently, the lubricating oil's global consummation is about 38 million tons every year, and China itself uses about 4 million tons per year. Among them, over 90 percent of the lubricating oil is made from the crude oil, which has lower bio-degrade ability and multiply poisons like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It is estimated that over 10% of the lubricating oil finally goes into our environment, generate pollution and endanger human's health condition.The green lubricants made from rapeseed oil and then from modified plants oik synthetic-ester has been developed by the request of the consumers, manufactures and the governments. The market partition had increased from only 1% in 1997 to 10% in 2005. But there is not a standard on the green lubricants world widely. ISO is working on a standard of hydraulic oil (ISO/DIS 15380.2000), which will increase the request of bio-degrade ability, poison, inhibition and others factors.The modern lubricating oil is composed of 90% of base oil and 10% of additives. The base oil is the major factor in deciding the lubricating oil's bio-degrade ability. The base oil for the green lubricants is mainly coming from natural plants oil, synthetic base oil (ester), and modified base oil (hydrocarbon oil and PAO) .Natural plants oil has higher viscosity index, no poison, excellent bio-degrade ability, low volatility, better lubricity, and most important, it is a renewable resource . But compared with the crude oil, it has such shortcomings: the poor thermal oxidation stability, the worse hydrolytic stability, the high price and so on.
