Nowadays, with the development of methodology, signal processing techniques become important tools in technology and are widely used in many fields, such as sound, image and biomedicine. As an excellent one in signal processing, wavelet transform (WT) algorithm has been a focus of attention in chemistry. Chemists make scientific researches on spectra analysis by employing WT algorithm for denoising, filter, baseline correlation and feature extraction, etc, and achieve tremendous success in the fields. The ability of multiresolution analysis of WT can be used not only to signal analysis, but also to spectra compression. At the present time, with the great improvement of detection technology and the development of new instruments, the standard infrared spectra database becomes larger and larger. It should be a significant work for data storage and fast spectral searching that compressing the infrared spectra efficiently. In this dissertation, several important issues are discussed about the applications of WT in infrared spectra compression. Based on the previous work, we attempt to increase the compression ratio (Chapter 2 to Chapter 3). In former study of spectra compression, great efforts have been made for ultraviolet-visible spectra compression by only using Daubechies wavelet. In fact, infrared spectra...
