The synthesis of liquid fuel based on Fischer-Tropsch synthesis through the coal or natural gas-derived syngas would have significant meaning in resolving the problem of the energy and environment protection in the world. To develop a novel catalytic technology, which possesses high selectivity toward naphtha and diesel and simplify the industrial craft or manipulation, would save the cost in investment and operation of GTL (or CTL) technology. This thesis studied the characteristics of cobalt-based catalysts supported on various activated carbons for the synthesis of naphtha and diesel oil distillates from syngas. It was found that the Co/AC-2 catalyst with high surface area and special pore size displayed high activity and selectivity toward middle distillates. The effect of ZrO2 promoter upon performance of activated carbon (AC-2) supported cobalt catalyst was investigated. The results showed that Zr-promoted Co catalysts could improve significantly the activity and C5+ selectivity. The results of XRD and TEM indicated that the dispersion of Co-based catalyst was enhanced with the existence of ZrO2 promoters. The TPR results showed that ZrO2 could increase the reducibility of Co/AC-2 catalyst. The results of CO-TPD and TPSR indicated that addition of Zr enhanced CO dissociation, accordingly,...
