Due to the high length-to-diameter ratio of slender shaft, workpiece ?exural de-formation and vibration are frequently encountered during cylindrical turning of slen-der shaft. Thus, turning slender shaft is still a well-known difficult technical problem.Today, this problem is solved basically by empirical workmanship of the operator.This results in the fact that a demanding technical level of the lathe operator is es-sential for turning of slender shaft. And the productivity is very low. With the rapiddevelopment of science and technology, the demands for precision of mechanical partsare increasingly high. Efficiency and automatization of design and manufacture wouldbe the inevitable tendency. Traditional machining methods cannot feed the needs inprecision and efficiency. Under this condition, it becomes necessary to seek the break-through for solving the problem of turning slender shaft. Consequently, it is very im-portant to analyze quantitatively the in?uencing factors of ?exural deformation anddiameter error of slender shaft, and to probe approaches for minimizing the diametererror.In this study, analytical models of ?exural deformation and diameter error ofslender shaft are developed. A series of experimental tests are implemented to validatethe proposed model. The results show that there is a good agreement between thevalues simulated by the model and the measured values in the experiments. Based onthe model, some approaches are found for minimizing diameter error of slender shaft.First, the present status of investigation of turning slender shaft is analyzed. Inthis area, there are few foreign investigations, which are focused on mechanism ofturning slender shaft. But a lot of domestic investigations have been carried out forimproving the turning of slender shaft. Most of them are focused on such aspects asselection of turning conditions, structure design of special follower rest, and additionalforces acting on slender shaft. These investigations play an active role in minimizingdiameter error of slender shaft. However, most of them emphasize particularly onmanipulative knacks in practice.
