Belt conveyor is the ideal equipment for high-speed, automation, continuous operations for long-distance transportation of the bulk materials, which is widely applied in industries such as electric power, metallurgy, chemical engineering, coal, mine, ports and foodstuffs. With the development of industrial demand, the design of belt conveyor aims at long distance, high speed, great capacity and high-power directions. Therefore, there appear more problems in terms of dynamics of belt conveyor. This requires systematic research on dynamic feature of belt conveyor to realize the prediction and optimization on belt conveyor performance in designing stage. Hence, it will become more reasonable in economy and reliable in technology.First, this paper introduces the development of the belt conveyor, and analyzes the current research situation at home and abroad. The deep research on dynamic behaviours of our conveyor belt is to raise the level of belt conveyor design in the international market and the competitiveness of the key.This paper analyses the static and dynamic behaviours of the belt, and establishes the dynamic elastic modulus. By analyzing the characteristics of the Kelvin and Maxwell viscoelastic model, the former is selected as the conveyor belt model as it can more realistically reflect the mechanical characteristics of the conveyor system.On the basis of the dynamics analysis for the belt conveyor, stiffness factor of take-up device is taken into consideration. Then finite element model with three drive pulleys, as well as the movement differential system equation was established, which can conduct dynamic analysis on the above system parameters.The paper brings forward the objectives that the lowest total cost during the life-span of the conveyor is the aim of optimizing design for conveyor. It analyzes often-used design standards of belt conveyor and chooses CEMA standard as its basis. It discussed the effects of idler spacing selection on belt conveyor power consumption. A new design method is developed based on the design of belt conveyor turnover. It discussed the effects of idler spacing selection on belt conveyor power consumption. A set of large-scale conveyor design system software is developed. The software adopts virtual reality technology and graphical modeling technology to realize side-shaped design and dynamic modeling subroutine. The system can carry out the static and dynamic analysis for various operating situations and realize the prediction and optimization of dynamic performance on belt conveyor performance. Hence, the belt conveyor will become more reasonable in economy and reliable in technology.Finally, the paper makes a static design and carries out a thorough analysis on dynamic characteristic on a large belt conveyor with the Belt Conveyor Design System software created in this paper. It confirmed the reliability and practicality of the software. This software has been applied to engineering practice.
