Since the late 90's, the satellite communication systems begin the network era both in civil and military area. In civil communication field, non-GEO communication systems (MEO or LEO) that provide the global coverage of the earth have become the important part of personal communication system. In military communication field, that requires various satellite communication systems on the different orbit communicate with each other and form intelligent and organic system, also called space-based information system (SBIS), according to most effective utilized principles. The satellite network can be linked indirectly by earth-gate-station (EGS) or directly by inter-satellite-links (ISL). The way satellite network linked by EGS need a large mount of EGS and some special EGS to be located in ocean, desert and enemy countries, which is unpractical. The way satellite network linked by ISL can make up the weaknesses of EGS,reduce the dependence on earth system and fullfils the fast transmission of information.According to deficiencies of single layer satellite network, such as changing topology, long delay, high block probability, low robustness and constraints to positioning and tracking of ISLs caused by relative movement of satellites, the thesis concentrates on design of multi-layer satellite network composed of satellites in various orbits.Firstly, modeling and simulations of satellite network are investigated. With developments of satellite networks on increasing scale and demand of applications, traditional methods are not suitable to analyze performances of satellite networks. By analysis on simulation systems of satellite networks, models of satellite constellations based on STK and models of satellite protocols based on OPNET are proposed to analyze performances of satellite networks.Secondly, characteristics and topology of satellite networks are analyzed. According to movement of satellites, topology of satellite networks changes periodically. By theoretical analysis and simulations, orbit, geometry and topology of satellite networks are studied, which are helpful to design of...
