The stems of Gymnema sylvestre (Retz.) Schult is the drying part aboveground. The leaves of the plant have the function of diabetes, reduce blood fat, anticaries and antisweet which had been used as diabetes drugs. But researches on the plant's stems about chemical constituents and pharmacology haven't been reported. The studies will made system research on chemical constituents and pharmacological action for plant rational exploitation.Triterpene, saponin, steroids, organic acid, phenols and saccharides were the main constituents in the stems by the fore-experiments of chemical constituents and TLC contrast. The constituents in the stems were the same as the leaves. The alcoholic extract obtained from the dried stems were divided several portions which were purified by chromatographic methods. 12 monomeric compounds had been isolated and 8 compounds were identified: conduritol A, 1-Heptadecanol ,stigmasterol glycoside, 1-Quercitol,l-octadacanol,potassium nitrate, lupeol cinnamate, stigmasterol. 1-Heptadecanol, Stigmasterol glucoside, 1-octadecanol, lupeol cinnamate were the first time obtained from Gymnema sylvestre.Alcoholic extract, n-Butyl alcohol portion and alcoholic portion Showed significant hypoglycemic effect on the experimental diabetic mice induced by alloxan. The mechanism of hypoglycemic action of the alcoholic extract related to accelerating the repair of pancreatic inlet β cells injured by allloxan, increasing secretion and decreasing decomposition of insulin in alloxan diabetic mice and mouse, the insulin...
