Background: With the opening and reforms in China and the prosperity of rural and urban markets, the pedlars' markets have become important places for jobless citizens and rural surplus labor force to seek employment. The stallholders in the pedlars' sell vegetables, fruits, chicken and animal flesh, water fowl and some other kinds of daily necessities for the nearby residents. These are also places with lots of restaurants, beauty shops, baths, private clinics and the like. The stallholders are the main body of the population on the pedlars' market. They have unique geographic and demographic characteristics: firstly, sexually active middle age adults and adolescents, consist the bulk of the stallholders; secondly, their education degree are low and their responsibility for the society are weak; thirdly, a substantial part of stallholders are single, and their association with each other are close, making them easy to forget their responsibilities for their families and provoke non-marital sexual behavior; fourthly, the community environment which the stallholders live also tend to induce the premarital and extramarital sex . The characteristics above can make our inferring on the base of theories easy, that is the stallholders on the peddlers' market are likely to be the bridging population of the spreading of HIV/AIDS, the peddlers' markets may be amenable for HIV/AIDS spreading and thus merits more attention. Objective To learn the prevalence of STD/AIDS, STD/AIDS-related knowledge, attitude, behavior (KAB) and its risk factor among SPM, then to find an effective intervention mode to prevent and treat STD/AIDS among SPM.Method Three pedlars'markets (PM) were selected as study sites in Hefei city. Questionnaire was used to investigate 752 stallholders between 18-25 years old selected with cluster-sampling method. 333 stallholders took laboratory test of STD/HIV.
