Aim The polysaccharide is one of the main compounds isolated from Angelica sinensis(Oliv.) Diels, a well-known Chinese herbal medicine. In recent years, as more and more polysaccharides have been reported to exhibit a variety of biological activities, including anti-tumor, immunostimulation, etc, the polysaccharides from Angelica sinensis have also attracted much attention. The previous study showed that the crude polysaccharide from Angelica sinensis had no obvious inhibitory effect on mice transplanted sarcoma S-180. However, the fraction of low molecular weight demonstrated significant anti-tumor effect, and the average tumor inhibitory rate to S-180 was 36 %. Therefore, the chemical structures of the polysaccharides seemed to have great relationship with anti-tumor activities. However, to our knowledge, few studies on the structural features and linkage compositions of polysaccharide from Angelica sinensis have been undertaken. In this research, we attempt to purify the polysaccharides and investigate their structures as well as the anti-tumor activities, and further explore their possible mechanism of inducing apoptosis in carcinoma cells. The results will help for elucidating the structure-activity relationship of the polysaccharides from Angelica sinensis...
