Background and Objective: Controversy persists regarding the extent of resection necessary for cure of esophageal cancer. This study is therefore to assess the efficacy of 3-incision (left cervical, right posterolateral thoracic, and upper midline abdominal) subtotal esophagectomy for squamous cell carcinoma in the upper or mid-thoracic esophagus. Patients and Methods: 1024 patients underwent subtotal esophagectomy for upper thoracic or midthoracic esophagus squamous carcinoma with the stomach being used for reconstruction and anastomosis in the neck from January 1983to January 2001 in the thoracic department of cancer hospital PUMC, 683 of whom underwent surgery through 3-incision approach and 341 through 2-incision, so the patients were divided into two groups: 3-incision group and 2-incision group, the mortality and morbidity rates were compared between the two groups, and long-term survival were compared between patients of the two groups with similarly pT...
