Objective To evaluate the the clinical application of two-dimensional echocardiography(2-DE) in transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect(TCASD) using Amplatzer septal occluder(ASO). Methods 699 patients with secundum atrial septal defect(SASD)(252 males and 447 females) , diagnosed by clinical and 2-DE ,were studied. The mean age of the patients was 22.2±15.5years(ranged from 2-65 years). All patients were suited for TCASD according to the 2-DE(204 patients were determined by TTE, 495 patients by TEE). All patients underwent TCASD using the ASO under TEE or TTE monitoring (379 patients by TEE, 320 patients by TTE).Results The ASOs were deployed successfully in 664 patients. The maximal diameter of ASDs was 19.72±6.26mm (4~34mm),the ASOs were 23.8 ±16.58mm (10~40mm).There were complete closure in 652(98.2%)patients,small residual shunt in 12 (1.8%) patients.Only 3 patients had a tiny residual shunt at the follow-up of 3 months. There were 35 patients with multi-hole defects, 1 patient was successful closed with two ASOs,33 patients using single ASO,1 patient failed. Conclusions 2-DE play a very important role in the selection of patients and ASOs for TCASD and in the monitoring of deployment of ASO during TCASD.
