Background: In recent years, the clinic liver transplant were made a great progress in our country. When our opetation skills get close to the western country, many post-operation problems come up. The most frequent virus infection is caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV), which may raises the fatality rate post liver transplantation. Objective: Compare the pre-emptive and the prophylaxis treatment by a clinic control study. Find the better treament strategy of the CMV desease. Methods: Sixty-three Liver transplant recipients were divided into two groups ( prophylaxis group and pre-emptive group). All of them were tested for CMV by pp65 antigenemia and quantitative DNA-PCR assay weekly within 3 months post-transplantation. In the prophylaxis group all patients received ganciclovir regularly. In the pre-emptive group only patients with either assay positive received ganciclovir treatment. Results: The incidence of CMV infection was 17% (5/35) and 36% (10/28) respectively. No CMV disease appeared in all patients (0/63). Conclusions: Ganciclovir pre-emptive therapy is not associated with a higher incidence of CMV disease compared with the prophylaxis therapy.
