The family Schisandraceae (Magnoliales), consists of two genera, Schisandra and Kadsura. About 60 species distribute worldwide, while about 29 species in China. The fruits of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill. and S. sphenanthera Rehd. Et Wils. are recorded as tonic and anti-tussive agents in the Chinese Pharmacopeia (2005), under the items Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis (WuWeiZi) and Fructus Schisandrae Sphenantherae (Nan WuWeiZi), respectively. In China, more than 20 Schisandraceae species have been used as medicines. Many fruits of Schisandra plants, such as S.rubriflora and S.henryi are used in folk medicine as substitutions of WuWeiZi. Stems and barks of Kadsura are often use for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer. For example, the stems of Kheteroclita are used as JiXueTeng.Schisandraceae plants mainly contain lignans and triterpenes. In the last several years, extensive studies on the bioactive components of Schisandraceae plants have been carried out. Novel lignans and triterpenes possessing different skeletons isolated from Schisandraceae plants exhibited various biological activities including anti-HIV, anti-tumor and antioxidate acivites. More and more interest has been focused on the family Schisandraceae. The present doctoral dissertation deals with the bioactive constituents from stems of two medicinal Schisandraceae plants.27 compounds were isolated from the ethanol extracts of the stems of Kheteroclita by various column chromatographies. 23 of them were identified on the basis of spectral analysis (including UV, IR, CD, MS and NMR). There are 12 lignans, 9 triterpenes and 2 other types of compounds, of which 16 were new compounds, 1...
