Background(1) There are different reports on the endotoxin changes in postoperative patients. Recently, endotoxin inactivation capacity is introduced to evaluate the ability of plasma to inactivate endotoxin.(2) Glutamine has been reported having the immune-enhancing capability and protecting the gut barrier. Low level of glutamine has also been noticed in trauma and severe mobidity.Objects and Methods(1) The present study endeavours to establish stable methods to detect endotoxin and endotoxin inactivation capacity in a normal population and general surgical patients.(2) This trial also evaluates the plasma endotoxin level, plasma endotoxin inactivation capacity and outcome after glutamine was supplemented using a prospective, randomized, double-blind treatment study design.Results(1) Plasma endotoxin levels were 0.044±0.009 EU/ml' in the normal population and 0.0441 ±0.023 EU/ml in the patients preoperatively. Endotoxin level...
