Epidermal growth factor is a single-chain peptide with 53 amino-acid residue. Its roles are very widely. It can conduct the mitogen signal from cell surface to nucleus through binding to the EGF receptor and cause complicated biology roles.EGF can promote cell proliferation. As a tumor promoter, EGF can enhance the carcinogenisis effect of virus and chemical carcinogen. In vitro, EGF also can transform cells.Comparing with EGF, EGFr have more closed relation with tumor. Many years ago, people have noticed that the v-erbB oncogen is homologous with EGF receptor gene. EGF receptor also share tyrosine-specific protein kinase with some oncogen. EGF receptor overexpressed in many tumors and cell lines derived from tumors, especially in epithelial tumors. The close relation of EGF and tumor cause people looking for some methods to cure and diagnosticate tumors. Last some years, many labs discovered that EGF can inhibit the growth of some tumor cells and transplant tumors. This inhibition effect have close relation with the interrelation of EGF and EGFr and appear biphasic dose- response phenomenon ie: low conconcentration (
