Modern Chinese functional food has been developed on the basis of the abundant resources, invaluable experience, and comprehensive theories of food therapy in traditional Chinese medicine. However, until now, little systematic research has been done, particularly on the information systems of Chinese functional food, the theoretical research of Chinese functional food, reviews of the classical publications, and strategies for future development. The present thesis fills these voids with a comprehensive and systematic study of Chinese functional food. The finding and information resulting from the study has been organized and managed in electronic form, using cutting-edge multimedia interactive information technology. The information systems enable the contents to be accessed and referenced efficiently and in a user friendly manner.The present thesis consists of three sections.Section 1 Information SystemsThe information about research papers and articles, classics, government regulations, functional food and medicine, functional food products, etc., was organized into two major information systems, i.e., a multimedia information system of Chinese functional food (MISCF) and a bibliographical database.A multimedia information system of Chinese functional food (MISCF) was developed to provide the basic information of traditional and modern Chinese functional food. The information content consists of five parts, including (1) theoretical research, (2) functional food and medicine, (3) traditional food therapy, (4) imperial food and food therapy, and (5) functional food products. In addition to multimedia audio and visual effects, (MISCF) provides an excellent multimedia environment with Chinese style for education and entertainment.A bibliographical database was developed to help users to maintain and keep track of the information about Chinese functional food published in books, journals, and magazines.Section 2 Theoretical ResearchTo develop theoretical research for Chinese functional food development, systematic analyses were performed on the historical development of Chinese functional food, the current development of Chinese functional food, the approved more than 2000 Chinese functional food products, the terminology of medicated food, the combination of Chinese Medicine and Chinese functional food, the...
