| The lung plays an important role in the production and transportation of Qi and blood, which has been clarified when the lung's physiological function and the relationship with Qi were discussed in Huangdi's Canon on Medicine. The key role of the lung, however has been understated due to the statement of"the kidney acting as the congenital and the spleen the acquired source"from Li Zhongzi, a distinguished ancient Chinese doctor. The fact that attention only paid to regulating the spleen and stomach, not to the lung has become a critical issue concerned. With the basic knowledge of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the method of literature combined with clinical practice, this thesis aims at the collection and categorization of ancient literatures like Huangdi's Canon on Medicine as an example, so as to initiate the study of"the lung dominating Qi". The study shows that the opinion of"the kidney acting as the congenital and the spleen the acquired source"from Li Zhongzi is not a perfect statement. Then the theory of"the lung also acting as the acquired source"was brought forward. This theory was established on the basis: Qi being the source and origin of life; the lung dominating Qi including Respiratory Qi and General Qi(dispersing and descending activities, regulating water passage, receiving blood vessels, as well as governing the rhythm and regularity of Qi); all diseases related to Qi disorder and the treatment resorting to adjudging Qi, and the key points for healthcare focusing on regulation of Qi.The role of the spleen as the acquired source should not be ignored while the lung was emphasized. Both the lung and the spleen acted as the sources of Qi, blood and lucid juice of the body. Taiyin Meridian of Hand Lung and Food Spleen governed Qi share similarfunctions. All diseases occurred from Qi and the treatment should turn to regulating Qi metabolism. The lung Qi and the stomach Qi lay the foundation of pulsation diagnosis together. As the acquired origin, the lung and the spleen coordinate with each other in the course of production of Qi, blood and the lucid fluid of the body, as well as regulation of Qi and water metabolism physiologically while interacted pathologically and influenced with each other therapeutically. The kidney as congenital source and the spleen and the lung as acquired source support mutually.By emphasizing the theory of the lung being the acquired source, we can rethink of and relocate its true conception, which may remain the practitioners of paying more attention to conducting the lung while focusing on the spleen, a traditional conception, so as to provide a new clue and guide to clinical therapy. |
