Stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels is a considerably meaningful literary form. It develops from poetic quality to realistic form, which highlights a special life form in which a symbiotic relationship between the subjects and the objects establishes. Besides, this form has the significance of intertextuality with the main spirit and social culture in different periods. This is mainly reflected in the following four aspects:Firstly, stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels shows the weakening trend of poetic quality in the process of its development. It developed in the period of the May Fourth Movement from the styles of "the combination of poetry and prose" and "filling with emotions" in poetic novels, the styles of "letters inserted" and "talking and listening" in epistolary novels, and the styles of "new fancy" and "childlike perspective" in the fairy tale novels. Then in 1930s, its main forms were the style of objective narration in prose fiction, the style of identity imagination in biographical novels, and the style of scene display in sketch novels. In 1940s, the style of the combination of events in reportage novels, the style of telling stories in storytelling novels, and the style of conflict centralizationin in dramatic novels were popular.Secondly, paradox exists in stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels. In the popular realistic forms in 1930s and 1940s, epistolary novels, diary novels, poetic novels and poetic texts often appeared. However, these poetic styles carried reasonable content. It highlighted either the group discourse or the consciousness of the times. It reflected the paradox between content and form.Thirdly, the individual spirit exists in stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels. The May Fourth Movement was an awakening era when people paid urgent attention to the value and the significance of individuals. The connotation of inward personality matched the narrative style which was noted for poetic quality and indicated individuals" poetic life forms, namely leisurely nature, the depression of youth and the transcendency of life. After 1930s, the Wartime made the individuals join in the society, and urged them to write something about the inevitable new era. The connotation of inward personality matched the style of display which was noted for realistic description and indicated the reasonable social form of individuals, namely a clear sense of the times, the historical inevitability of faith and aesthetic enlightenment function.Fourthly, unique cultural connotation exists in stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels. Both the intertextual poetic life form and the intertextual reasonable social pattern exist in certain cultural field and they are influenced by it. In such an environment stylistic mutual penetration in modern novels includes three cultural connotations:firstly, it keeps the harmony of the traditional poetic concept and the cultural field; secondly, it integrates the leisurely nature and ethical folk cultural field; thirdly, it practices the cultural field of heterogeneity which is full of enlightenment and utilitarian. They interact with each other and change with the changing times, which are manifested in the form of stylistic mutual penetration. In a word, systematical study on the changes of stylistic mutual penetration in the modern novels has a special literary and historical significance. For one thing, it indicates the process of modernity in the development of Chinese novels since the May Fourth Movement-that is, the development from the lyrical style to the narrative style. In other words, the traditional narration which employs narration in a perspective of an inner focusing developed towards the modern displayed narration which employs narration in a perspective of an exterior focusing, and then gradually interpenetrated and integrated with the novels produced after the May Fourth Movement, which reflected the Chinese novels was on the way to modernization. For another, it may provide the theoretical basis on which the history of modern fiction and the history of modern literature can be restated, that is to say, according to the law of development, people can restate and rewrite the history of modern fiction and the history of modern literature, for example, by considering the development of novels as the ordinate and the stylistic differences in different stages as the abscissa, people can find individual’s personality, spiritual culture, and the aesthetic style. This is the narrative style of history based on the noumenon of novels, and it surpasses the one only focused on subjects.
