Since there is not any ocean wave data assimilation system, which is suitable toeastern china seas, and no application of ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) method inocean wave data assimilation, two wave data assimilation systems have been built. The author firstly investigated commonly used data assimilation methods, pointed thatthe essence of all of them is a filtering process, and chose optimal interpolation (OI)and EnKF methods to build the two systems. Besides, the dynamical model used inthe systems is WAVEWATCH III, and the observation data are Topex/Poseidonaltimeter measurements of significant wave height (SWH). Then the author usedobservational method to study the statistical characteristics of the forecast error, andpointed out the correlation distance scale is 3°~6°. Lastly, the results of the twosystems is validated against the 22001 buoy SWH measurements, showing that theroot mean square (RMS) of the error in OI system is decreased by 9.0% and that inEnKF system by 6.0% with 50 ensemble samples. The OI system run stably and ispromising to be used in operational centers. And it is feasible to use EnKF method toassimilation ocean wave data system.
