As concerning the high toxicity of organotin paints, the need to develop new environment-friendly antifouling paints has been highlighted. The acrylic polymers used play a very significant role in the processing and end-use behaviour of the antifouling paints.In this work, two types of novel acrylic copolymers, which contains zinc atom in a form of polymeric salt and capsaicin moiety, have been developed. The zinc aery late copolymers were prepared with two procedures: one is that a acrylic prepolymer containing (meth)acrylic acid reacts with zinc hydroxide(or copper hydroxide, zinc oxide) and a organic acid; the other is that a acrylic prepolymer containing (meth)acrylic acid reacts with basic zinc salt of organic acid. The reaction procedures and the zinc acrylate copolymers were examined with FTIR, 'HNMR, X-ray, GPC. The complex of zinc acrylate copolymer and copper acrylate copolymer shows good antifouling effect, and a biofilm was observed on the surface being in an exposure to marine environment. A antifouling paint from the zinc acrylate copolymer were also inverstigated and the properties of the paint is compared with a antifouling paint (Seamate HB66) of JOTUN company, the paint shows 2 years life time of antifouling, the beheviour is well expressed by the TEM analysis. Based on the phenomena of the paint in the sea, it is deduced that the antifouling property comes from the interaction of physical, chemical and biological factors, which make the surface is not suitable for the fouling organism to adhere.In this work, a capsaicin assembler containing acrylamide moiety-N-(4-Hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzyl)-acrylamide (HMBA) ' was synthesized successfully. And the molecular structure of HMBA was testified by FTIR and 'HNMR. At the same time, a new copolymer containing capsaicin moiety was obtained via the copolymerization of HMBA monomer with other acrylate monomers. The obtained copolymer was used to prepare antifouling paints orincorporated into the antifouling paints as a main antifouling binder. The antifouling properties of the paints were shown after an exposure to marine environment and good antifouling effect were observed. The properties of the paint is compard with a professional antifouling paint for fishnet-FLEXGARD VI antifouling paint of FLEXABAR-AQUATECH company.
