Objective:To sort out tonic prescription in Qianjinfang comprehensibly; to explore the law of herbs nature, nature-effect relationship, dosage-effect relationship, the law of compatibility, to cover the shortage in the above-mentioned research field; to summarize Sun Simiao's tonic prescription academic ideas; to provide a guideline in the clinical application of tonic prescription and to broaden the mind in ancient tonic prescription research.Methods:The combination of literature study method and statistical method is used. The tonic prescription in Qianjinfang is sorted out by using TCM literature study method; the law of herbs nature, common herbs and dosage are summarized in the form of a frequency table; the nature-effect relationship and dosage-effect relationship are studied under chi-square test; frequent combination of herbs are found by adopting association rules and the law of compatibility is explored.Results:First, the tonic prescription in Qianjinfang is sorted out comprehensively and an herbs database is established, which contains 491 formula and 476 herbs that appeared 5728 times. Secondly, a general rule of herbs nature is summarized:warm herbs are favored, which is followed by moderate herbs and the cold herbs are least favored; sweet herbs are frequented, which is followed by spicy, bitter herbs and the sour, salty herbs are least used; nontoxic herbs are the majority and the toxic ones are minority, the herbs are less favored with the increasing of the toxicity. Thirdly, there is a correlation between the herbs nature and effect while there is only a vague associativity between the dosage and effect. Fourth, the major law of compatibility is the combination of nature and effect while the minor law is selecting herbs according to the syndrome; frequented combinations of herbs are sorted out and summarized.Conclusion:First, Sun Simiao's academic ideas are systematic and wholesome, he is good at using warm herbs and is cautious in using cold herbs; he emphasizes herbs nature in compatibility and combines nature with effect in addition to selecting herbs according to the syndrome. Secondly, Sun Simiao's rich academic ideas and toxic prescriptions could be used as guidelines in the clinical practice, namely, nature-effect relationship should be emphasized in clinical application and the cold tonic prescription should be used cautiously.
