| 1,Cytokine response in infants undergoing major abdominal surgery Objective:Cytokines are important mediators of the host response to stress and infection. Infants and children undergoing major surgery are particularly at risk of developing sepsis. Methods:We have investigated the temporal sequence of cytokine responses and level of cortisol in twenty-two infants undergoing major abdominal surgery . TNF- a ,IL-6 and IL-8 were measured by ELISA preoperatively,at the end of surgery and 6,12 and 24 hours postoperatively. Results:All cases had an increased in IL-6 and IL-8 in the early postoperative period. There was a significant correlation between the peak IL-6 response in patients and the severity of the operation as expressed by the surgical stress score. Conclusion:Serum IL-6 is a sensitive early marker of tissue damage. Furthermore, these results suggest that IL-6 and IL-8 levels have prognostic significance. |
