Salvianolic acid A, isolated from dried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge(Labiatae), exhibits a strong antilipoperoxidant activity as a scavenger of lipid free radicals and mild antithrombotic effect , possessing potential clinical applications. To provide sufficient sample for identifying its structure by synthetic methods and investigating its pharmacological activities, a salvianolic acid A derivative— hexamethyl ether of salvianolic acid A benzyl ester and a derivative of rosmarinic acid, another active principle of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge(Labiatae) — tetramethyl rosmarinic acid benzyl ester were synthesized in fourteen steps and six steps with the overall yields of 3.4%,,and 13.0%, respectively. The structures of the target compounds were established by ~1HNMR, MS. This is the first report of building these structural skeletons .Another project carried out in this dissertation involves the design and synthesis of seleno-organic compounds possessing selenoenzyme Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity. Selenoenzyme GSH-Px catalyzes the reduction of a variety of peroxides including lipid-hydroperoxides and is believed to protect biomembranes as well as other essential cellular components against oxidative challenge. GSH-Px catalytic function-like seleno-organic compound—Ebselen (2-phenyl-l,2-benzisoselenazol-3(2H)-one) exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activity including the efficacy of anti-LTB4 biosynthesis , and is very biologically active .
