Teaching of Chinese characters is always a challenging issue that has chronically been present in Chinese education. The way of Chinese character cognition is steering away from phanopoeia, logopoeia and melopoeia toward Pinyin system. It seems more simplified, but essentially changes from the traditional way which is concrete-to-abstract and suitable for Chinese character cognition, to the Pinyin way which is conducted through the phonetic rules rather than the shape-based rules. This shift resulted in the separation of the Chinese characters from its foundation---object, history and daily life, and further made teaching of Chinese character more time-consuming, longer periodic and less effective. In essence, this result is caused by the fact that only the instrumental rationality of characters is emphasized, while their value rationality is often ignored.The study explored the cognition of the generation system which united the shape, pronunciation and meaning of Chinese characters as well as Pinyin in order to fundamentally solve the previous issues. To achieve this vision, not only is theoretical study needed, but also the more important thing, is the completion from theoretical concepts---the core of theoretical construction generated by cognitive and Chinese characters, to the technology, the application design, and finally the whole parts of study including verification by experiments. This thesis has built a basic theory of character generation system, completed the design of Etymology literacy basic platform based on this theory, proposed the application mode of Etymology literacy based on this theory, and designed and implemented contrapuntally the targeted experiments to verify the scientificity and effectiveness of the theory and its practice.By systematically combing the research results on the rules of Chinese character and its cognition, lots of ideas and materials on Chinese character generation system theory and its application have been found as support to this research.From the level of theory construction, this paper presents that etymology is the generation basis of Chinese character, configuration is the generation core of Chinese characters, component is the generation unit of Chinese character, and character expression is the product of a series theoretical constructs of characters generation. According to these ideas, the generation system was designed where the shape of Chinese characters is the core, the Chinese characters are the Etymology information, Chinese characters meaning configuration analysis and structure analysis is means, and the expression of Chinese characters are to integrate Chinese characters form, sound and meaning of Chinese characters. This system determines the relationship between Chinese characters, which is generated because of relation of the form of sound and meaning, as well as form, sound and meaning of Chinese characters within the relationship between the three elements. This theory organically links the ancient and modern Chinese characters, helps to explain the direction from the vertical relationship between the characters, and the relationship from the horizontal direction of understanding the internal shape, sound and meaning, restores a fresh, three-dimensional, full Chinese character system, and helps to recognize Chinese characters by the scientific, three-dimensional, dynamic and crossed ways.While the generation system of Chinese character is the basic theory of teaching, there is the teaching method of etymology literacy corresponding to the generation system.In the technology level, under the guidance of the Chinese character generation system theory, an etymology literacy basic platform was designed. It consists of Chinese characters generation subsystem, etymology literacy resource platform, etymology literacy learning platform and management subsystem and so on. This platform completes the integration and generation of a massive of basic data, offers WEB-based interface services, and provides two ways to give effective support to etymology literacy teaching in teaching resources and learning tools. Using online surveys/questionnaires of this platform to study various types of users, it is proved to be capable of supporting teachers, students and researchers in related research.In the level of application model research, micro-macro mode and application mode applications of etymology literacy was proposed, the characteristics of these two models, different ways, and the operation mode of the two modes was discussed.In the level of experimental research, this paper have a preliminary empirical study on the teaching of Chinese characters which is based on the theory of Chinese characters generation system, by using the method of an experimental method and case study as the basic research methods and prove that etymology literacy based on that theory not only can improve the efficiency and quality of teaching of learning characters, but also improve their ability to observe and promote the quality of student thinking enhanced feelings of students of Chinese characters. The research result, such as the teacher word cards, teaching PPT, teaching mode, can be directly used and referenced.Finally, by summarizing the results of studies on theories and practices of Chinese characters generation system, the future research plan is proposed. In the hope of more practitioners joining in, the studies on theories and practices of Chinese characters generation system will be more in-depth, more systematic and more perfect, and promote the teaching of Chinese characters will return to the origin of value rationality from the Instrumental rationality.
