In 1913, Rabindranath Tagore(l 861-1941) became the first Asian to win Noble Prize. He carried unique national culture to the world, and make Oriental discourse which had been in a stake of aphasia all along attract the Occident' attention. Under the influence of Craze of Tagore in the Occident and Japan, Tagore's thought and literary works started spreading in China from 1913. By 1923, "In China, Tagore not only has been popularly known but also has been popularly respected and admired"( said Xu Zhimo ). To some degree, it proved the intensive influence which Tagore exerted on Chinese literature. In 1924, Tagore came to china to give lectures. Tremendous special issues concerning about Tagore's visit of China appeared in all the Chinese big presses and magazines overnight; and his poems, novels and dramas were translated and introduced by the literature youths, even were rehearsed by some groups. During his visit to China, Tagore gave 18 public lectures and dozens of small-sized talks which were reprinted by all the big presses, thus causing the Craze of Tagore in China. From today's point of view, Tagore's influence on China itself has been covered with historical dust. However, provided we wipe off the dust we'll find out that the research on Tagore still has a lot of doubts which deserve us to examine and ponder over. Today, even if some scholars study Tagore, they only concentrate on him as an individual and the certain comparison between Tagore and Chinese writers, relatively ignoring the role that Tagore' played in the turning point of the development in Chinese literature, which was not very remarkable but undeniable. That is to say, the importance that Tagore exerted on Chinese Literature is neverappraised rightly. What I concern about is the propagation and the influence of the very person and bis words in China, the degree Chinese Literature have learned from him and the success and fas failure in it. By observing, evaluating and reflecting it again, I will present the uniqueness of Tagore's impact on Chinese literature. The theme of the thesis is developed through two aspects in six chapters. The first aspect is to analyze historical facts and expound the processes in which how Tagore was introduced to China and how he got involved in Chinese intelligentsia, and all the disputes about him, and tries to represent the truth of history. This aspect is divided into two chapters:Chapter I discusses the whole circumstances in which was introduced to China, the translations of his literary works and the frequent disputes concerning him.Chapter II discusses the Tagore's influences on Chinese ideology and culture in the historical description around his visit to China, mainly on how he got involved in the disputes between Science and Metaphysics, tradition and modernity, Oriental culture and Occidental culture, and the discourse to save nation. In the second aspect, by analyzing his influence on Chinese Literature around May Fourth, I'm intended to examine his impacts on spirit, mechanism and technology in the trend of Chinese literature, thus to re-estimate his value. This aspect is divided into four chapters as fellows:Chapter IE researches on the three basic trend of Tagore's literature theme: gospel of love, the reality of Buddhist, the dignity of mine, and how these three aspects influenced on the outlook on life, nature and affection in modern literature. It also analyzes how his aesthetic awareness and literary thought are connected with Chinese writers and what relationship it would be in the fundamental or the subordinate theme between modem Chinese literature and his works.Chapter IVanalyzes Tagore's deep impact on Chinese literary formsfrom the aspect of new poem, novel and drama in May Fourth, and the causality between Tagore and Chinese prose poem, little poem and lyric drama.Chapter V analyzes how narrative, aesthetic trend and female images in Tagore's novels and dramas provide potential models for Chinese literature. On one hand, writers, after reading hi...
