At turn of the last century, Shen Zengzhi (沈曾植) was a brilliant scholar, calligrapher and a famous representative poet of Tongguangti (同光体) in the later Qing dynasty, and now and then involved himself in the public affairs of his day. Shen was no literary but endowed superb genius and originality. Especially, Shen inspired later generations with his theory of 3~Guans( "三关税" ), namely, Yuanyou(元祐), Yuanhe (元和), Yuanjia (元嘉), the three critical periods that shamed the tradition of Chinese poetics.And in the study , the author further asserts a new interpreation of the 3-Guan theory: (l)the introdution of more ideas into arts; (2)the Confucian ethical symbolism.Shen advocated drawing on Confucian classics. Chinese metaphysics and Buddhism to add richness and depth to poems, and hence create new peoty of transcendence, aesthetical and philosophical. According to Shen, only in and through such types of poems can rich peot think like the philosopher and have deeper sympathy with the world. Shen' notion and ideal of poetry are really inspiring and exciting, and will definitely channel the future creative and critical efforts about Chinese literature. And then, Shen also showed an important intenion of his poetic ideas that I call it Huayanshijing ("华严诗境"), namely he showed such a poetic idea that combinates real consciousness of life, self-cultivation and art creation into a poem.Shen Zengzhi emphasized the combination of ideas and art in order to encourage the inward cultivation of Confucian poets. At the heart of his theory-I call it Yarenshenzhi ( "雅人深致" ) is a profound and inclusive consciousness of life unique to the Chinese culture. The present thesis is to explore the influence of the Chinese tradition and intellect on his poems. That is to say, compared with art of poems making, sincerity and wisdom should play the leading role in a poem; the destiny of the country, people and culture should be the greatest concen of a poet. The last part of the thsis is an attempt to ascertain the cause of Shen' s3-Guan (三关) theory, and to defineis main festures in terms of history, biography and scholarship.But Shen Zengzhi also emphasized his a sense of poetic history, I call it Yinshi("因时") . This means a literary creation can express all culture spirit of a time, namely, poetry can be become a prism of a time culture.Shen Zengzh also has an important nation about poetic that is Yijingfashi( "以经发诗" ) . This idea means that a Chinese tranditionalnation Wendaoheyi(文道合一) is reaffirmed to literature creation in the modern time,And Shen Zengzhi was a brilliant calligapher. Comparing his calligaphy theory with his poetic theory, a same intenion can be found in the both internal relations that is a point to encourage a culture spirit which based on self-cultivation.This study in the last is observtion and study about the poetic theory of Tongguangti("同光体"), an integration of changes of the times and feelings of living, reflects a practical thoughts in poetic trainings and a demand of inner factors or accomplishments for a poetself are fully accounted and valved by Chenyan (陈衍), an important poet and theorist, and become the identity and orientation of its poetic thoughts.To sum up, the study chiefly explores the intellectual and cultural legacy of Shen' s poetics. Therefore, it is necessary to trace to the larger context of tranditions in Chinese philosophy and culture.
