THE STUDY ON THE SHANGHAI` NOVELS FROM THE END OF NINETEENTH CENTUY TO TWENTIETH CENTURYA Dissertation Presented to Shanghai Normal University in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of LiteratureBy Meng Zhao ChenIn the study on the literature from the end of ninteenth century to the early half of twentieth century, We are always splitting whole phenomenon and put them in separate learning fields. For example the Shanghai novels ,though Shanghai experienced the period of concession,Gudao and Guomindang, the Shanghai literature developed all the time and never stopped. In other words ,the Shanghai literature is a whole,integrated literatural history. But what we have done is to split it and study in such realms as modern literature,Xiandai literature ,new literature and old literature. Under the circumstances we can not find the developing law of literature because we had ruined the whole historic reality. One of the purpose of this dissertation is to change the present state and integrate all the parts into a real and whole study of Shanghai novels .The Informations from the end of ninteenth century to the early half of twentieth century differ from Chinese ancient literature. Most of the informations spread in pre－liberation old newspapers and magazines. They are in confusion .It is very hard to collect those informations and bring some order to them so as to make them useful . The another purpose of this dissertation is to set up a information bank of Shanghai novels from the end of ninteenth century to the early half of twentieth century.Shanghai used to be the center of economy and finance. From another point of view it was the center of entertainment and consumption. Many people were attractd by the fascination of Shanghai and went to enjoyed themselves. In many parts of the dissertation I deal with entertainment and consumption site,Changsan,Yaoni,Taiji,Shuchang,Guanren,Xianrou,Dancing girls ,Party girls.The dissertation is divided to two parts. The first part deal with industry of entertainment and consumption,custom,fashion and living ideal. The second part deal with the development of Shanghai novels,environment in which writers lived,collecting the information of the writer,enrolling works,studying vulgarism,discussing Shanghai novels art.
