As a representative of Chinese classical novels, All Men Are Brothers has been widely disseminated from the middle of Ming Dynasty up to date, with deeply interested readers from different times. Readers in each age were trying to explain the novel, while the novel at the same time shed profound influence on the readers generation by generation. The article tries to understand the reception history of All Men Are Brothers during the past 500 years in accordance with the basic theories of Toward an Aesthetic of Reception.The article is composed of six sections: Preface, Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.The Preface mainly introduces the views about the basic theories of Toward an aesthetic of Reception, and examines their respective advantages and disadvantages. Then, the guidance of the basic theories of Toward an Aesthetic of Reception on the research of Chinese literature history is discussed, with the content and overall features of the reception history regarding All Men Are Brothers as a focus.Chapter 1 discusses the reception of All Men Are Brothers at Ming Dynasty (including the occasional comments, remarks on the novel and drama adaptation) and explains relationship between the tendency about the reception of All Men Are Brothers and the age.Chapter 2 introduces the reception of All Men Are Brothers at Qing Dynasty, including its explanation and impact, with continuation, adaptation, prohibition and destruction involved.Chapter 3 takes the period from late Qing Dynasty to early Min Guo as the background. The new features of the reception of All Men Are Brothers during the social storm and stress and revolutionary period are discussed, including the overturn- ing of the traditional explanation by the influence from the western culture.Chapter 4 discusses the reception of All Men Brothers in term of the history of modern literature. The reception of All Men Brothers demonstrated its richness and complexity thanks to the impacts from 4th movement, western culture, political struggle, National liberation and so on.Chapter 5 explores the reception of All Men Are Brothers after 1949. This period is divided into three phases: the early days after the founding of People's Republic of China, "Cultural Revolution" and the new time. The political environment and the cultural atmosphere in different periods had a different influence on the reception of All Men Are Brothers.
