This dissertation focuses on film expression systematically. The key concept in expression is "show & tell". "Show " means presenting visual image, and "tell" means presenting verbal language. "Show & tell" means combining both the visual and sound. I hold that making use of visual and linguistic functions is the invention of filmmakers for presentation.It is useful to research and discuss the principles of "show & tell" in movies, which can facilitate establishing and improving the movie science, directing people' attention to the particularity of expression of movies, changing the situation that theoretical frame and terms in other fields are rigidly used to explain the movie phenomenon. It is also helpful to establish the theory of creating movies.There is complicated relation between representation and narration. According to different scales, such relation can be categorized into four kinds. The relations between pictorial image and language, that is to say, their contradictions, animations, deviations and simultaneous separation. Recognition and clever usage of the four kinds of relation undoubted can improve qualities of movies and make movies have more movie features. Representation of images and narration of language have tremendous potentials in the "show & tell" of movies. People' inside world, such as subtle feelings, emotions, thoughts, can be represented by images. And different kinds of narration also have such potentials in "show & tell" in movies, which have not been fully recognized yet.There are concealed strategies in the successful "show & tell" of movies: symbolizing and usage of metaphor, principles of avoidance and substitution, zero degree emotion "show & tell" and usage of premise, etc. which all can make wonderful "show & tell" in movies. Recognition of these strategies and creatively using them can give dim "show & tell" of movies a bright future.Collective consciousness of "show & tell" and sudden releases of it are the inherent reasons of formation and out-burst of new surge in moves. Whether there is consciousness of "show & tell" of not, whether it is strong or weak decide the quality of movies. "Self" and "selfless" center on attaching importance both on pictorial image and language are "creating" and "search" the carrier and drawing the conventionality or not. The concepts of "show & tell" of movie producer can be divided into several categories which have many connections with forms of movies. Changes of concept of "show & tell" in movies decide the direction of movies and influence the future of it.
