The development of speech sounds was investigated using the analysis framework of phonemic contrast in Putonghua-speaking children. There were applied two kinds of clinical perspectives: perceptual task, and acoustic property. The development of speech intelligibility and phonemic contrasts in Putonghua-speaking children was investigated across 5 adult listeners as a task of perception. Acoustic measurement was conducted to examine the development of acoustic features in Putonghua-speaking children.Speech intelligibility and chronology of phonemic contrast were indicated as a function of age in Putonghua-speaking children. The contrastive and reduction of variability for voice onset time and frication noise duration were demonstrated in Putonghua-speaking children as older. Finally, speech developmental link considered in terms of speech intelligibility, phonemic contrast, and acoustic features.The results on speech sounds development can provide an effective assessment and remediation of speech disorders.
