The historical relationship between Chinese modern literature and art culture of China and the West is an important research topic at present. By inspecting and analyzing the pictures in modern Chinese literature, the thesis tries to apply a broader research method to studies of modern Chinese literature so as to break through the conventional way of thinking and old pattern. The pictures involved in this thesis are mainly covers and illustrations of the classical works of modern literature;types of the pictures include abstract symbols and graphs as well as drawings. On the basis of macro-analysis, the thesis gives priority to textual pictures;and by close reading the pictures, the writer's aesthetic analyses and micro-studies present the pictures' modern traits and their inner relations with art culture of China and the West. The paper suggests that studies of modern literature should contain a study of pictures. The pictures in modern literature record the development of modern literary trend and updating of concepts, artistically show the thematic implications and spiritual meanings of modern literature, so they are art enlightenment coexisting with literature enlightenment. The pictures act as signs and symbols in the course of the spread of modern literature, so that nowadays our museums and libraries are still using the pictures to spread the enlightenment ideologies and modern spirit. Pictures are closely related to printing, publication, communication and the development of national culture, and have been attached much importance to by the pioneers who compiled series of books in their enlightenment cause.MOTLEY SERIES compiled by Lu Xun is a model that stands for covers' transition from traditional to modern form, which laid a foundation of modern structure of calligraphy, landscape painting and art of the human body. CRY OUT represents the type of art that takes calligraphy as the leading factor, which manifests the trend of the times and the art culture's practical influence upon modern Chinese culture's construction in the following aspects: printing culture, the fine arts historical trend, formal features of Chinese characters, writing order, and color composition. Hu Shi, Cai Yuanpei, Qian Xuantong, Liu Bannong, Ye Shengtao, Guo Moruo, Zhou Zuoren, Wei Jiangong, Zheng Zhenduo have all left their calligraphy on the covers, showing the pioneers' excellent grasp of Chinese national culture and high comprehensive qualities, for Chinese characters form the root of Chinese nation. In modern literature's art of pictures, the cover of the first edition of WEEDS stands for the type of art whose major object of display is landscape, which is still suited for modern people's philosophical thought. Modern people creatively utilized the traditional Chinese and western art culture to establish a new picture language to hand on the cultural tradition to our generation. The symbolization of composition, color, and line;the artistic expression of the spirit in landscape paintings;the interaction circle of art and literature;and the graphic display of the themes of modern literature, all these compose the pioneers' philosophical thoughts on modern China. The reason is that pictures have inner relations with national culture and personal psychological characteristics. As a result of the interaction circle of art and literature, the pictures' background is the huge field of New Culture Movement. Wen Yiduo, Ye Lingfeng, Ni Yide, Shen Congwen, Hu Feng, Ba Jin, Ai Qing, Bian Zhiling, Xiao Hong and Zhang Ailing have all created covers of books. The awakening of the human being embodies the enlightenment features of New Culture Movement and modem literature. The most modern picture in modern literature is the cover ofJUANSHI, which represents the art of the human body and gives prominence to the nature of modern literature, that is, the discovery of the human being. Moreover, there were discoveries of children, peasants and soldiers. Pictures produced by Zhang Guangyu, Ding Cong, Liao Bingxiong, Yu Suoya and Feng Pengdi are closer to the textual quality and style of pictures in modern literature. Qian Juntao and Cao Xinzhi's pictures are remarkably elegant and have lyric style. Gu Yuan and Zhang Ting's pictures stand for a kind of display of the people in the liberated area. Pictures in modern literature that mainly depict the human body and figures contain all the themes of modern literature, that is, to display human beings and the people. The studies show that:1. The texts of modern literature include textual pictures, which make up an important part of modem literature. The themes of modem literature can also be expressed by visual images;this means the lack of studies in the pictures in modem culture will be greatly improved.2. The art of the pictures in modem literature is a bridge leading to the works' implications and the authors' inner world. The artists produced the pictures were usually the authors themselves or their close friends who were familiar with their temperaments, personalities, lives and experiences, so the pictures can get closer to the connotations of the works.3. The pictures have gone through the transition course from tradition to modernity, which is also the course that the authors have experienced in their pursuit of modernity. The course means the unity of subjective spirit and art innovation, and the art of pictures in modem literature is actually the outcome of the above two aspects.4. The feature of the pictures in modem literature is that the artists have absorbed aesthetic taste of both China and the west, and created their unique style. In their creation, there are influences of Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, Chan and Xuanxue, and also that of modern western philosophical trend and graphic aesthetics, but the leading tone of national color is evident and easily seen.5. The study of the pictures in modem literature implies the balance between artistic creation and studies of literature, which is just the heart of the matter in my study. Close reading the pictures is an attractive research method, but it's not at all easy to explain them appropriately.
