Finnegans Wake is a book of"chaosmos". This dissertation is dedicated to decoding the hidden order of this"chaosmos"created by James Joyce consuming 17 years, the hidden unity that binds together all of the otherwise distressingly fragmentary text, focusing upon the unique property possessed by the circular form and content of the novel, i.e. the homeostasis or dynamic equilibrium that quietly but firmly governs the essential novelistic elements of the work such as its flexible language, fragmentary narrative, fractal structure of time, flickering characters, and fluctuating motifs. By approaching the chaotic-cosmic text from these different perspectives, this dissertation is divided into five chapters:Chapter One analyzes the hidden order of the flux language system of Finnegans Wake. As the hidden law of the verbal jungle, the dynamic stasis of"sounddance"in the"woid"(FW, 378) indicates the felicitous fallibility of language, echoing the central motif of man's happy fall, confirming the indivisibility of form and content of the novel. Furthermore, the flux language also enhances the sense of"chaos-cosmos"by resorting alternately to lyric rhythm, verbal repetition, musical mosaic, and artistic synchronism by gliding syntax and portmanteau.Chapter Two explores the narrative vortex system that evolves from the early sketches including"Roderick O'Connor","Tristan and Isolde","St. Patrick and the Druid","St. Kevin's Orisons","Here Comes Everyone", and ALP's letter, which are actually revolving around a central narrative clue, the fall of HCE. This chapter exposes the dynamic stasis of a narrative pattern in two dimensions: one, the historical evolution of the vignette from avant-text to the final text, focusing on the St. Kevin vignette; the other, the textual fluctuations of the recurrent passages, by a study of the Quinet...
