Chinese ancient landscape paintings represent the nature scenery on the surface, but actually, they are symbols of artists'ideals and spirits. These paintings have abundant and deep artistic conceptions which contain many philosophic and aesthetic thoughts about people, nature, society, universe, and dialectic relations between or among these items. Chinese ancient landscape paintings are the artistic achievements of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. From the facts of material analysis, the author sums up three main modes to show the rules of paintings and poems: one person painted, and he wrote poems on the same painting by himself; one person painted, and another person wrote poem on it according to the content or spirit of painting; one person painted according to the content or spirit of some known poem . Traditional landscape paintings have the same artistic rules with landscape poems. First, they can break through the limit of time and place, can exhibit compositive images from different times and different places. Second, according to these compositive images, they can express artists'subjective feelings freely and unlimitedly. These two rules are the artistic principles about Chinese ancient arts, inciuding landscape paintings and landscape poems.
