Unemployment is a complex social and economic issue, and is also a kind of representation of the deviation between the labor force and the productive material. As for now, unemployment is the common issue that each of countries has to confront. The global economic crisis in 1929 aroused fear of unemployment. The unemployment situation in China which was in the multi dilemmas was going from bad to worse with the affection of it. This dissertation fairly and systematically explored the issue of urban unemployment in China from 1927 to 1937 with the reference of the previous researches and the solid basis on the extensive reading of the literatures such as some newspapers and journals. The interdisciplinary knowledge of economics, sociology and demography served as the theoretical support for the dissertation.Three parts were included in the dissertation. They were the introduction, main body (three chapters) and conclusion.In the part of introduction, the reasons why the topic was chosen were elaborated and the subjects for the research were defined. The previous research results on the unemployment issue of Nanjing National Government in the decade of 1927 to 1937 were systematically summed up. Besides, the resource of the materials, the theoretical basis, the research method, the general train of thoughts and the expected object were introduced in this part.The first chapter was the general introduction of unemployment. In the decade of Nanjing National Government, the unemployment had been prevailed in various works and trades all over the country. The number of Chinese unemployment appeared the momentum of slowing firstly and rapid growth afterwards in the division of 1931. The unemployed people mostly intensified in the coastal cities and the atmosphere of unemployment was obvious in the traditional industries. The interactions of the interior and exterior factors resulted in the explosion of unemployment crisis in China. For example, the natural disadvantages of the economic competitive ability of Chinese national industry and commerce, the frequent natural and man-made disasters, the deficiencies in Chinese educational system, the boundary of the unequal treaties and the impact of the world economic panic. The unemployment permeated throughout the country, which not only impeded the economic development and popularized poverty, but also caused various social issues. The social order was disturbed and even the national ruling was threatened.The second chapter was written about the unemployment structure and the types of unemployment. The urban unemployment structure was analyzed from the perspectives of sex, age, occupation, educational degree, marriage and family.
