Gao Weijie is one of the outstanding composers in present age of China. He based on the traditional cultures of music and walks in front of the exploration of modern music. He has plentiful pieces of works and mature theory of music. He has made his own view of the relationship between tradition and innovation, technical nature and music on his own artistic creation. His three systems of pitch-class set combinatoriality, localized chords of twelve-tone, and man-made scale of non-octave cycles are innovational. These systems are bared on a lot practices. The research of the strength of chords is a great breakthrough as a new way of harmony research. In his works system of pitch and techniques are new and original. But the musical tract has the obvious inheritance and inherits the traditional music. This topic analyzes the theory and technique of Gao's creation on his work especially his pitch-class set combinatoriality, localized chords of twelve-tone, and man-made scale of non-octave cycles. This paper explains on four chapters. The first chapter introduces some information of the composer Gao Weijie, such as his achievements of music and growing up for readers. Thesecond talks about Gao's three innovational techniques and theories——pitch-class setcombinatoriality, localized chords of twelve-tone, and man-made scale of non-octave cycles. Although these three systems are innovational, these have their theory origin. Especially, man-made scale of non-octave cycles breaks the structure of traditional scale and the limitation of octave cycles to be man-made scale. But it still keeps the characteristic of circulation cycle as the same of the traditional scale to be the sister of the traditional scale. This chapter introduces the theory origin of three techniques, explains the theory system and analyzes the using way with works. The third chapter discusses the characteristic of his harmony technique, polyphony technique, music structure processing and orchestration. It explains how Gao inherits the traditional creation technique in modern music and innovates. The forth chapter pays attention to a few of Gao's works to see his thinking, technique, tactic, and the relationship among these and his unique artistic charm.
