A Study On The Combination Of Verbs And Verbal Classifiers In Mandarin Chinese

In recent years, terms combination research are more and more received widespreadattention by thetheoretical and computational linguistics academic field. Based onthe results of previous studies, guided by the semantic grammatical theory , thisarticle carries on the special discussion on the combination laws of verbs andverbal classifiers in Mandarin Chinese ,combining the principle of form and meaning,static and dynamic state, and description and interpretation.The main contents, summed up in the following points:(1) Starting from the human cognitive concept of "bounded" and "unbounded",it explores the relationship of the bounded actions, action measures and verbalclassifiers. It not only makes sure about the nature and content of"verb-classifier" structure from the perspective of the origin, but also findsthe deep restricted mechanisms and governing foundation for all kinds of "verb-classifier" structure.(2) Proceeding from principle of the two-way choice of verbs and verbalclassifiers, it uses comprehensively semantic feature analysis, Systematicallyreveals the combination regulations and features of verbal classifiers subclassesand verbs subclasses, and forms the flow system of combination of verbs and verbalclassifiers.(3) It breaks through the static study tendency focused only on the traditionalphrase level, and has auseful mining and exploration into the usage and constrainsof combination of verbs and verbal classifiers on the sentence and discourse level.(4) It studies a number of important verbal classifiers, combining synchronicand diacbronic analysis, so we can find the historical foundation of synchronicregulations for them and their matching with the verbs, and it makes the discussionof synchronic regulations more reliable and objective.(5) After detailed investigating the semantic functions of "number+ Verbalclassifier" structure as an adverbial and comparing with its function as a complement,It finds a series of semantic distinction function and features of "number+ Verbalclassifier" structure as an adverbial.This article not only verifies theoretically effectiveness of a two-way choice,and gives the scientific proof of "semantics decisive, syntactic mandatory, andcognitive interpretative", but also produces the necessary prerequisite andfoundation for combination of verbs and verbal classifiers in practice of foreignlanguage teaching, computer natural language processing, lexicography and thecomparison with Sino-Tibetan language.
