The Operation Of Vernacular Chinese From The Late Qing Dynasty To May 4^th Movement

The concept of "operation of vernacular Chinese" in this paper is to define the development of vernacular Chinese from the late Qing Dynasty to May 4th Movement, and to differ from the Vernacular Chinese Movement in the May 4th Period. Although the operation of Vernacular Chinese is far behind the May 4th Movement in scale, influence and value, it is the important foundation and basis of the May 4th Movement. In addition, it is also an important literary history that can not be ignored and a significant cultural phenomenon to view the historical period from the late Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Movement.The operation of vernacular Chinese is an lingual operation of great influence and devotion to the construction of modern Chinese, whose proof can be seen in the development of newspapers in vernacular Chinese all over the country, the popularity of civilization drama in different cities, and the circulation of novels of Mandarin Duck and Butterfly in citizen group. The vernacular Chinese has had larger objects and greater scale of influence as well as the accumulating impact on traditional Chinese after the promotion and operation of social elites and literary critics. Not only in the term of language usage, the operation of vernacular Chinese has combined with the new idea, the new culture and the new form of arts in the transformation of communication form, through which the vernacular Chinese had acquired the central status of the mainstream form of handwriting Chinese.The operation of vernacular Chinese has applied the mode of language improvement, it is quite different from the mode of language reform in the Vernacular Chinese Movement. So their influence on the development of vernacular Chinese is different, through which we could examine the rule of language change and benefit the further development of literature in Chinese language.Through the examination of the above aspects, this paper proved that the operation of vernacular Chinese is as important as the May 4th Movement in the construction of modern language. Furthermore, as the foundation and basis, the operation of vernacular Chinese from the late Qing Dynasty to May 4th Movement has made great influence on the May 4th Vernacular Chinese Movement, and also plays a constructive role in the construction and development of modern literature of Chinese language in China.
