A Research On The Development Of Dragon Dance Performances In Chinese Universities And Colleges

As a traditional Chinese folk sport which enjoys a history of more than2000years, the dragon dance performance not only carries the nation's culture and spirit,but also serves as an impressive name card for China. With the passage of time, this popular folk sport has spread to the holy universities and colleges,and,by means of a combination with modern sports, gradually developed into today's college dragon dance performance with its distinctive features. It has played a significant role in carrying forward traditional sports culture, promoting college sports reform, and cultivating sports talents, However, there still exist some urgent problems that we can not afford to ignore, including curriculum designing, teacher training, teaching staff construction, sources of funds, etc. In view of this, this research focuses upon the occurrence and development, value orientation, development tactics and development strategies of dragon dance performance in Chinese universities and colleges,which will be discussed in four parts.The first part introduces the occurrence and development of the dragon dance performance in Chinese universities and colleges. Despite the rapid expansion, there is room for improvement for the development of Dragon dance. The current courses on Dragon dance primarily centers on PE majors, with little attention on the non-majors; there is a lack in the course credits; furthermore, and an obvious deficiency in fund.The second part illustrates the value orientation of the dragon dance performance in Chinese universities and colleges. Based on the overall review on the value orientation of universities and their physical education, Following the analysis on the necessity and possibility of dragon dance development in universities, it is proposed that individual development serves as the major value, knowledge and research the second, and the social tool the third.The third part expounds the development tactics of the dragon dance performance in Chinese universities and colleges. The major external opportunities for the Dragon dance development include the national emphasis on traditional sports, the rapid social and economic development and the PE reform in universities, while the external challenges lie in internalization of sports, entertainment trend, and individualized trend. The internal advantages are the distinctive national characteristics, time and quality insurance for training, stable resources for development and innovation from universities. The internal disadvantages are the lack of fund, faculty, market demand and entertainment. With the aid of SWOT Analysis, the present study has suggested four strategies respectively, namely SO, ST, WO, and WT. Furthermore, an overall development strategy is proposed for the Dragon dance development in universities, making a three-step strategy for the coming15years (2011-2015); specific and major measures are given on the curriculum design, talents squad construction, faculty building, scientific research and popularization.The fourth part proposes the development strategies for the dragon dance performance in Chinese universities and colleges. Diversification, socialization and internalization comes up in the research.
