The Social Welfare Field Habit

The important role of welfare cultures in shaping social welfare models draws more and more attention of the researchers with the cultural turn, broadening and deepening in the study of social welfare. Some scholars think that differences between welfare cultures are the main factors influencing and determining social welfare models. This is a macro-theoretical hypothesis. It takes a lot of academic achievement to make positive examination of this macro-theoretical hypothesis. Starting from the micro-stage (community), this dissertation inquires into the welfare cultures of the Jinuo and Bulang nationalities the economic development of which is similar. The purpose of this study is to make clear if there are any differences between the welfare cultures of different nationalities with similar economic development, and what they are if there any. This dissertation puts forward a conceptual frame to study welfare cultures and tests it in this study. This is micro-comparative study of welfare cultures from the viewpoint of nationalities. This dissertation consists of eight chapters.Chapter 1-Introduction, summarizes and analyzes five theoretical points in the interpreting and studying social welfare from the viewpoint of culture, explains in detail the logic and basis for this study, discusses and constructs the conceptual frame to study welfare cultures of this dissertation, and states the main characteristics and significance of this study.Chapter 2-Summary of the Documents, summarizes and criticizes the literature of and achievement in the study of welfare cultures and explains the relations between them and this study.Chapter 3-Research Design-analyzes the relations between Bourdieu's theory of "field-habitus" and its relation with the study of welfare cultures. It also discusses and explains how the theory of "field-habitus" is used in this study. It gives the information how the sites for facts finding was chosen and their basic circumstances and expounds in detail how to carry out the facts finding.Chapter 4-Basic Habitus of Welfare Field, analyzes the basic habitus of welfare field, namely the concept of welfare models, of the Jinuo and Bulang nationalities. It discusses in depth the relations between nationalities and the concept of welfare models and the social meaning of the degree of this correlation.Chapter 5-Habitus of Welfare Sub-Field(A), analyzes the concepts of poverty, relief, and providing for the aged of the Jinuo and Bulang nationalities. They two have different views on the causes of poverty, different attitudes towards poverty, and different opinions on how to overcome poverty, and different attitudes towards relief and the moral hazard in relief as well.Chapter 6-Habitus of Welfare Sub-Field(B), analyzes the concepts of values of life, diseases,and education of Jinuo and Bulang nationalities. They both think that religion and sorcery are to some degree causes of diseases, but the degree of Jinuo nationality is weaker than that of Bulang nationality. Jinuo nationality values education more than Bulang nationality does. The sense of being sexually equal in education of Jinuo nationality is stronger than that of Bulang nationality.Chapter 7-Deep Habitus of Welfare Field, analyzes the concepts of religious welfare of Jinuo and Bulang nationalities. The sense of religion in life of Jinuo nationality is weaker than that of Bulang nationality. In the field of providing for the aged, the sense of religion in life of Jinuo nationality is weaker than that of Bulang nationality. In the field of medical care, the sense of religion in life of Jinuo nationality is weaker than that of Bulang nationality. In the field of education, religion exerts less influence on Jinuo nationality than Bulang nationality.
