Ethnic Russian National Identity

Russian nationality is an important member in Chinese nation. Although Russian nationality has less population,yet it is of peculiar importance in the 56 nationalities.Its importance lies in its relation to the relationship of China and Russia and the stability of Chinese frontier area. But so far it,as a nationality with very important meaning,has not been studied enough in China.Ethnic identity is a hot topic in sociology academe in China.The relative study to ethnic identity is gradually wide and thorough.But the ethnic identity study of Russian nationality is rare.Combining the study of the ethnic identity of Russian nationality and the ethnic identity theory in ethnic sociology,this dissertation has the theory meaning of enriching the nationality study in sociology,ethnology and anthropology and promoting the ethnic identity study of cross-boundary nationality.Trying to profoundly analyze the ethnic identity of Russian nationality,the dissertation will open out its regulation of appearance,development and change and the development trend.The dissertation will also discuss how to lead Russian nationality to change from ethnic identity to national identity and offer our country and local government helpful meaning in making policies about Russian nationality later.The dissertation adopts such study methods as participant observation,deep interview,questionnaire and literature etc.Shiwei village and Linjiang village,where many Russian nationalities live,are chosen as the participant observation sites.For deeply interviewing the Russian nationalities about the production,life and ethnic identity and collecting materials the author has ever investigated there three times.In Shiwei village the author interviewed the first set of 10 Russian folk tour families and completed 10 family tour reception questionnaires.In Linjiang village the author interviewed 70 Russians and the descendants of Chinese and Russian and completed 70 questionnaires on ethnic identity.The dissertation mostly refers to three kinds of literature: historical literature,local literature and archives.Now the author made the most use of the local literature.The dissertation mainly has three parts:introduction,text and epilogue.The introduction mostly introduces the meaning of the dissertation topic,the limit of the important concept and the term meaning in the dissertation,the retrospection of the ethnic identity theory home and abroad,the sum of the literature and study method etc.The text from chapter two to chapter six.the discussing center of the dissertation,includes five chapters.The second chapter introduces the survey of Shiwei Russian nationality town,history evolution and the population distribution change of Russian nationality in China.The third chapter introduces the ethnic identity history of Russian nationality, including the nationality origin,religious belief,language and custom etc. The forth chapter analyzes the ethnic identity of modern Russian nationality.The fifth chapter discusses the economic and socially cultural factors which affect Russian nationality identity.The sixth chapter discusses the national identity representation of modern Russian nationality,the relationship between the ethnic identity and the national identity of Russian nationality and the approach for Russian nationality to change from ethnic identity to national identity.The epilogue puts forward several viewpoints as follows:First,the nationality origin,religious belief,language and custom have great effect on the ethnic identity form of the Russian nationality.Second,the ethnic identity of Russian nationality includes not only the primordial emotional factors but also the instrumental factors.The primordial emotional factors are getting weak while the instrumental factors are reinforced.Third,the ethnic identity of Russian nationality has changed from hybrid to Russian nationality and the ethnic identity trend of Russian nationality to some extent appears enhanced.Forth,the factors which affect Russian nationality identity mainly include economy,education and medical care system.Fifth,the national identity of Russian nationality becomes clear and Russian nationality has strong consciousness of national identity for China.Sixth,the approach for Russian nationality to change from ethnic identity to national identity includes political identity,the development of ethnic economy and cultural identity.
