The industry of highway transportation had been great developed for severaldecades as the result of the rapid development of national economy. Meanwhile, themileage of rural highway had increased a lot and led to the development of passengertransportation. However, duetothelowhighwaygrade, poorroadcondition, unsatisfiedvehicle condition and unpracticed driving skill, bus accidents happened on ruralhighways from now and on, which caused giant people death and property damage. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate bus handling stability on ruralhighways, driver visual and psychological characteristics. The main research contentwere listed as follows:(1)road alignment, design speed, road grade and banking were analyzed todetermine the feature of rural highways.(2)realvehicleexperimentsweredesignedtocollectvehicledrivingparametersand driver data. Two montanic rural highways in Tonghua and Baishan city, Jilinprovince were picked out as the experiment route. Many curvature parts were includedand the route passes through several villages.AFord Transit with19seats was selectedas the experiment vehicle. Male, female, skilled and novice drivers were all includedamong subjects. VBOX and cameras were used to gather vehicle driving parameters, trajectories and traffic environment information. FaceLAB was used to collect drivervisual data and Captiv was used to obtain psychological data.(3)based on the obtained vehicle driving trajectories, the feature of vehicledriving trajectory was analyzed. It was found out that vehicle driving trajectory incurved sections should be divided into six types, namely ideal trajectory, normaltrajectory, cutting trajectory, swing trajectory, drifting trajectory and correctingtrajectory. While vehicle drives along different routes, the moment when vehicleentering, existing and borrowing the opposite lane were different.(4)inordertoanalyzebusdrivingstabilityinruralhighways,Lorenzscatterplotwas used. It was found out that driver was more sensitive to vehicle lateral accelerationin rural highways, yaw rate and roll angle were the next. This claims that most ofdriver’s subjective feelings for vehicle handling stability comes from lateralacceleration.(5)based on driver visual data obtained from real vehicle tests, fixationdistribution and the correlation of head and eye movement were analyzed. It was found out that the search strategy of skilled drivers were much better than that of novicedrivers. For both skilled and novice drivers, fixation point distributes in the nearbyregion of left road edge in bends driving, and the fixation trajectory approximatelyparallels with vehicle driving trajectory. This foundlings reveal that vision had a leadingrole in vehicle driving process. The start-point of the bends in driver’s visual field hada determined role in vehicle handling stability.(6)based on the EMG signal collected during real vehicle tests, transient heartrate was obtained using nearby RR peaks. Therefore, the correlation of heart rate andvehicle driving conditions was analyzed. It was found that there is no obviouscorrelation between heart rate and vehicle drivingconditions. The fluctuation of vehiclespeed will not lead to the reaction of driver heart rate. Only in the condition of waitinga long time for some reasons and at the beginning of moving, driver heart rate will havea small amplitude swing.(7)Trucksimwasusedtoanalyzevehicledrivinghandlingstabilitybysimulation.It was found out that the easement had a great influence on vehicle driving stability.Compared with curvature road without easement, when vehicle pass through bends bythe same speed, its lateral acceleration will increase, but the change rate will be smaller.Besides, when vehicle drives on different trajectories, vehicle handling stability will bedifferent. It will be the best in cutting trajectory and the worst in correcting trajectory.
