[Purpose]This study is aimed to investigate the personality traits and its’ influencing factors of left-behind children, to analyze the critical period of the personality development and the different influence for their parental being away from home, to find out the risk factors and the educational strategies and to provide the basis for government to formulate relevant laws and regulations.[Methods]A questionnaire survey on PC was conducted among about10053students selected by means of stratified cluster random sampling in399classes of4-12grade in44school in a north county of Jiangsu, which include a general situation questionnaire, FES-CV and14PF or16PF. SPSS16.0software was applied to do descriptive, t-test, Chi square test, ANOVA, multivariate analysis of variance, stepwise multiple regression analysis, association rules and decision tree analysis.[Results]The personality traits of rural students showed significant difference to the norm in1990s, and reversal difference was found in boys and girls.Almost all the personality traits of the left-behind students showed adverse qualities in comparison with the non-left-behind children. All personality traits of elementary and7traits of junior high school students showed significant difference with parent leaving home; Mother’s leaving in preschool period caused serious adverse effects; There were no significant difference in the personalities between the high school left-behind boys and non-left-behind boys; the factors such as B, C, F, H, Q3of high school left-behind girls were significantly higher than the non-left-behind girls, while the factors O and Q4of the former were significantly lower than the latter. The parental being long-term away from home has great impact on the development of personality traits of primary and secondary school students. The same factor has little influence on high school boys while the influence on the girls is distinct. The relationship between the parents and the children has remarkably influence on the personality traits of the children, and the students living in harmony with their parents will develop healthier personality traits. The number of friends would exert influence on the personality traits development of students from primary school to high school, and the students with no more than one friend often possess poor personality traits. The families of the left-behind students has less harmonious atmosphere than the families of the non-left-behind students, which will probably affect the development of their personality traits, of which the eight factors such as A、C、D、G、H、O、 Q3、Q4will undergo distinct impact. The kids’personality traits would be significantly influenced if their mother were away from home when they are in primary or secondary school, while the parents’ being away from home will exerts little infuence on their kids in high school.[Conclusion]The parental being away from home could exert severe adverse effects on the children’s personality traits when they are in preschool age. The mother’s company would be more important than the father’s for the preschool children. The phase prior to high school could be probably the critical period of the formation and development of the children’s personality traits.Whether a child can be defined as "left-behind kid" depends on when his parents are away from home, because the parental being away from home has great impact on the personality traits of the preschool children, while the influence decline sharply after the children go to school. The influence of the left-behind factors has longer duration on the girls, and the effect of certain factors may remain till high school. The number of partners, the relationship with the teachers and the family atmosphere would influence the children’s personality traits. The relationship between parents and children would exert more significant influence with longer duration against the parental being away from home.To study the left-behind children in ordinary high school, the validity of the sample may be impaired.
