The method of relieving exterior syndrome and clearing heat of Yingfen stage is for the treatment of febrile diseases at the stage of both Weifen and Yingfen. Wu Jutong illustrated this method in Wenbing Tiaobian in a great detail. Article 16th of Chapter Upper Jiao says, "If febrile disease invades Taiyin meridian, it is not appropriate to use sweating method. If there’s no sweat when using sweating method, it must cause erythema and macules. If there’s too much sweat, it must cause coma and delirium. For patients with erythema use Hua Ban Tang; For patients with maculas use Yin Qiao San subtracting Douchi, adding Xishengdi, Danpi, Daqingye, and doubling Xuanshen." In Article 39th of Chapter Upper Jiao, "If insidious summer-heat evil invades Taiyin meridian, manifesting such symptoms as red tongue, thirst but no sweat, it’s better to use Yin Qiao San adding Shengdi, Danpi, Chishao and Maidong. Article 53rd of Chapter Upper Jiao explains itself, "If malaria pathogen attacks the heart, the heart cannot bear the evil itself or it leads to death. Malaria pathogen starts from the lung, and attacks pericardium meridian due to adverse transmission. If the pathogen is at the superficial layer, use Yin Qiao San adding and subtracting other drugs to clear heat in the lung, chest and diaphragm, leading the pathogen to progress from Yingfen stage to Weifen stage." The three formulas mentioned above are prescriptions reflecting the treating method of relieving exterior syndrome and clearing heat of Yingfen stage.Syndrome involving both Weifen and Yingfen is often seen in the early and middle stage of the febrile diseases. As to the febrile diseases caused by insidious pathogenic factors, syndrome involving both Weifen and Yingfen appears in its early stage when warm pathogens incubate in the Yingfen and are induced by seasonal evils. As to the instant paroxysm of seasonal febrile diseases, the evils invading the defensive exterior quickly transform into fire and pass into the interior, skipping over Qifen and passing directly into Yingfen, and causing longer disease course. Syndrome involving Weifen and Yingfen may manifest the symptoms of Weifen syndrome like fever, aversion to cold, thirsty, as well as the symptoms of Yingfen syndrome like fever aggravated at night, vexation, delirium and deep red tongue. From the clinical perspective, syndrome involving Weifen and Yingfen simultaneously is characterized by exterior heat, but the symptoms of Yingfen syndrome are not typical, sometimes accompanied by vexation, delirium, indistinct ecchymosis, or dark red tongue. Also it is necessary to distinguish the principal manifestation between Weifen syndrome and Yingfen syndrome. The differentiation can be sometimes fever and aversion to cold or sometimes indistinct ecchymosis and restlessness instead. The method of relieving exterior syndrome removing and clearing heat of Yingfen stage is widely applied to treat the early stage of upper respiratory tract infections, influenza, acute tonsillitis, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, epidemic encephalitis type B, febirs hebdomadis and epidemic hemorrhagic disease with good effects. According to modern pharmacological research, this method has the function to induce perspiration, relieve fever, ease pain, anti-inflammation, regulate immune system, anti-pathogenic microorganism, regulate blood flow and blood coagulation system as well as antiperoxidation. This method not only fits for the treatment of febrile diseases, but also treats syndrome involving Weifen and Yingfen of other diseases on the basis of correct differentiation of syndrome. This research aims to observe the effects of treating pityriasis rosea using Yin Qiao San and Qing Ying Tang together. The results showed that after one course of treatment, treatment index of treating group was significantly better than that of control group (p<0.05). After two courses of treatment, the treatment index and total effective rate of treating group was higher than that of control group. After 2 courses of treatment, amounts of erythema and scales on the trunk of the treatment group was significantly less than those of the control group (p<0.05); and the infiltrating condition on the trunk and four limbs was better than that of control group (p<0.05). As to the itches, after one course of treatment, the itching condition of the four limbs improved better than that of the control group (p<0.05). It is clear that the treatment group improved better than the control group based on the condition of erythema, scales, infiltration and itches. Also, there’s great significant difference of erythema vanishing time between the treatment group and the control group (p<0.05). Hence we could see that erythema vanished earlier in the treatment group than in the control group, and the effects of relieving itches were equal, which meant Qingying Jiebiao prescriptions had the effect of shortening the course of disease, relieving symptoms and achieving satisfactory curative effects. It is necessary to do differentiation of syndrome, master synergy features, and coordinate with other methods when applied to the clinic. When pathogenic heat progresses from superficial layer of Yingfen to deeper layer, symptoms may present complicated pathological changes due to the nature of evils, body response, and physical difference. Except the exterior syndrome, some other syndromes may also appear such as blocking of heart orifices, blood stagnation and stasis, retention of heat in the large intestine, and deficiency of qi and fluid. Therefore, it is better to combine other methods such as clearing away heart fire and opening the orifices, activating blood flow and removing blood stasis, freeing the bowels and draining the fire, as well as tonifying qi and yin when necessary.
