ObjectiveTo systematic organize the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primordial spirit theory, summarize the rules from the corresponding field of other subjects, and explore the development direction and possibility of TCM primordial spirit theory.MethodsComparing and analyzing the TCM primordial spirit theory with Taoism primordial spirit theory, collective unconscious theory of Analytical Psychology and Buddhism theory of consciousness-only from several aspects, including generative theory, essential characteristics, structure levels, action mechanism and intervention methods, by the methods of literature research, comparative research and Exegetics.ResultsBased on generative theory, the conclusion of TCM primordial spirit is similar with collective unconscious about the point of accepted from parents. It is clearly stated that primordial spirit is changed from primordial essence and primordial Qi in TCM. But in Taoism, primordial spirit is produced by heaven, but not parents. In Buddhism, as the spiritual noumenon, alaya is the supreme existence, which can grow all things. Everything grows up from alaya is visional. Only the alaya is the most essential existence. The idealistic tendency of Buddhism is the basic differences from TCM, Taoism and Analytical Psychology.By essential characteristics, primordial spirit of TCM and Taoism are both congenital. They both have the characteristics of balance the body steadily and pluralism which means different body with different primordial spirit. In TCM, as the functional existence of the material base of human life activities, spirit can not exist independently with out material base. But in Taoism, primordial spirit can exist independently out of the human body. In Analytical Psychology, collective unconscious is the apriority psyche structure and behavior mode, with the characteristics of steadily and collective to everybody. In Buddhism, as one of the consciousness, alaya is the origin of every thing. Alaya is a independent spirit flow, with the characteristics of dynamic and multiformity, which means different body has different alaya.By structure levels, TCM primordial spirit is the deepest level of spirit system in TCM, Taoism primordial spirit is the deepest level of spirit in Taoism, collective unconscious is the deepest level of psyche structure, and alaya is the deepest level of consciousness. Although the four are all the deepest level of spirit, but their categories have a little different.Primordial spirit of TCM and Taoism are both the same in the function of regulating human life activities. In Analytical Psychology, the function of collective unconscious mainly influences human psychology and behavior. In Buddhism, the function of alaya mainly keeps the blja and grows everything. Analyzing by function, primordial spirit of TCM and Taoism are similar, which pay more attention in regulating the physiology and psychology, but collective unconscious mainly acting on psychology and behavior without physiology. A laya with the widest involved area emphatically explains the origin of all things. In the psychology, collective unconscious and Taoism primordial spirit are both have the same mechanism base on image.By intervention methods, to keep the body in mental stability, it can practice in many ways, such as by meditation in TCM, by internal elixir training in Taoism, by deep meditation in Buddhism. In Analytical Psychology, psychoanalytic techniques such as active imagination are applied to intervene in the unconscious level. The intervention methods of four fields above all have the characteristic based on image, so it is inferred that image is the universal expression modes of unconsciousness. The mechanism of primordial spirit intervention in TCM and Taoism is inhibiting the known spirit and superior in primordial spirit, so that the primordial spirit can take charge again to regulate the whole body when back to mental stability. In Analytical Psychology, the personality could be integration and development by understanding the unconsciousness through out active consciousness communication. In Buddhism, the trainer accepts everything mentally and reaches the inner peace to destroy kilesa and get release by several Buddhism trainings.ConclusionTCM primordial spirit is accepted from parents and changed from primordial essence and primordial Qi since life coming. Primordial spirit is the deepest level of primordial spirit in TCM, and also the first spirit. As the functional existence of the material base of human life activities, primordial spirit is the conclusion of self-organization of life activities, with the characteristics of steadily which means it dose not change by experiments once it forms, and pluralism which means different body with different primordial spirit. Primordial spirit is base on essence and Qi, but also can act on them. By action mechanism, primordial spirit of TCM and Taoism are similar in the function of regulating the whole human life activities, including 3 aspects: physiology, psychology and integral coordination. In physiology, primordial spirit regulates the viscera function, health function and self repair function by controlling essence and Qi. Primordial spirit regulates psychology by "WuZang Shen" system, which includes promoting the formation of WuZang Shen and managing WuZang Shen. By integral coordination, primordial spirit is one of the correspondence ways between man and nature. Primordial Qi interlinks with Qi in nature by the action of primordial spirit and keeps the inner body suits with the outside world by self-regulation. In the other hand, there is a balance between primordial spirit and known spirit in heart spirit. By intervention methods, inhibiting the known spirit and superior in primordial spirit through many meditation modes such as Qigong, so that the primordial spirit can take charge again to regulate the whole body when back to mental stability and finally reaches the inner balance and harmony. But meditation is not suit for everyone. Comparatively speaking, introversion group is more proper for meditation than extraversion group. And meditation is unfit for drawing out to a great length; it should be a proper range, so that it can keep the balance between primordial spirit and known spirit.
